Real Life Impact

Across seven counties, the Real Life Choices program serves more than 4,000 students by providing a curriculum based on healthy relationships, personal responsibility, and avoidance of high-risk behaviors. Over a six-week period, students learn how to set goals, maintain self-sufficiency, and utilize powerful decision making skills that will follow them into their futures.

Sometimes the best way to appreciate the impact of a program is by letting the people experiencing it speak for themselves. Our Real Life Choices Educators are in classrooms across the region every day, and what students and teachers had to say left us incredibly moved.

A Kettering Middle School student simply stated: “You were the BEST!! Thank You!!” Another added, “I liked this presentation because we were respected.” Words like these represent real influence on our community. When a young student feels valued in a learning environment, a real moment opens up, and that’s exactly the kind of space our Guest Educators strive to create.

At Northwestern High School, a student shared, “I think the Real Life Choices program is pretty fun. We get to discuss good matters and help plan for the future. Honestly, it makes me look forward to Tuesday.” At Urbana High School, students agree that their Guest Educator was the main reason they looked forward to school on Fridays. And at Warner Middle School, students were approaching their Guest Educator on the last day to personally thank her for everything she had taught them. One student even felt comfortable sharing that it was the most helpful class she’d ever had.

This impact doesn’t only affect students, as teachers are also taking notice. A Tecumseh Middle School teacher shared, “Bree is an excellent presenter, my students have enjoyed and appreciated her lessons.” At Kettering, another noted a heartwarming instance: “Students from years past will stop by to say hi and talk about what they learned from prior years. The program has a lasting effect.”

This lasting effect is what Real Life Choices is built for. While it’s great to have an entertaining lesson, it’s more important that students carry something with them long after the school year ends. We are proud of every Guest Educator making that happen, and grateful for every supporter who makes this program possible.
